EXPLOSIVE DETECTION DOG HANDLER  

Course Length:  30 days or 20 days depending on previous experience. (We will discus this with you and advise on the most suitable option for you)

The explosive detection dog handler will be trained to handle a dog that is trained to search, locate and indicate to its handler, the presence of explosives and associated items. This course is based on the British Military methods of training and handling detection dogs.

  • Animal Husbandry, care and welfare of dogs
  • Handling trained, part-trained, and’ green’ (untrained) explosive detection dogs
  • Learn the basics of evaluating and training an explosive detection dog
  • Searches will include buildings, vehicles, rural areas, dock areas, industrial areas and routes
  • Learn to handle dogs in situations such as Hostile Environments, Bomb threat, High Risk, Low Risk Scenarios, Royal visits, VIP visits, Routine Sweeps, Demonstrations
  • Explosives:  safe handling, licensing, health and safety requirements
  • Insight in to potential Employment opportunities, working in the UK and overseas, licensing for dog handlers and the Security Industry Authority (SIA)

An independent assessor from the BIPDT (British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers) will carry out an assessment at the end of the course.

DRUG DETECTION DOG HANDLER

 Course Length:  30 days or 20 days depending on previous experience. (We will discuss this with you and advise on the most suitable option for you)

The drug detection dog handler will be trained to handle a dog that is trained to search, locate and indicate to its handler, the presence of illegal drugs. This course is based on the British Military methods of training and handling detection dogs.

  • Animal Husbandry, care and welfare of dogs
  • Handle trained, part-trained, and’ green’ (untrained) drug  detection dogs
  • Learn the basics of evaluating and training a drug detection dog
  • Searches will include buildings (including nightclubs, public houses/social clubs, theatres), vehicles, dock areas and industrial areas
  • Insight in to the use of dogs in schools and the work place and working with the Police
  • Drugs: safe handling, licensing, health and safety requirements
  • Insight in to potential employment opportunities, working in the UK and overseas, licensing for dog handlers and  the Security Industry Authority (SIA)

SECURITY DOG HANDLER

 Course Length:  10 days

Next Course 11 February2008 to 22 February 2008 *

 The security dog handler will be trained in the safe and effective handling of security dogs in order to carry out an operational role.

 Syllabus will include:

  • Animal husbandry, care and welfare of dogs

  • Handling trained security dogs

  • Learn the basics of evaluating and training a security dog

  • Patrol techniques

  • Area Searching

  • Windscenting

  • Introduction to tracking

  • Detection and apprehension of ‘intruders’

  • Guard Dog Act

  •  SIA licensing requirements

  • Associations within the industry

  • Employment Opportunities

ONE DAY INTRODUCTION TO DETECTION DOG TRAINING

 Have you ever been interested in handling detection or security dogs?

 Wagtail UK Limited are hosting a series of one day introductions in to Detection and Security Dogs.  The day will involve presentations and practical demonstrations that will give an insight and understanding of the basic skills required for handling specialist dogs.

Next Introduction Day Dates:  13 February 2008, 16 February 2008 12 March 2008*

 The main theme will be towards Explosive Detection, Drug Detection and Security Dogs as well other disciplines.  The format for the day will include:

  • WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A DOG HANDLER
  • EXPLOSIVE DETECTION DOGS
  • Includes working in hostile environments. Skills required to become a dog handler, current legislation, licensing, insurance requirements, Middle East Operations, Royal Visits, VVIP visits, Bomb Threat/High Risk Scenarios, practical demonstrations and more…
  • DRUG DETECTION DOGS
  • Includes Passive and Pro-Active Drug Detection Dogs. Drug Dogs in Schools, Working with the Police, Licensed premises – the potential threats and danger,  strengths and limitations of the passive dog.
  • SECURITY/PATROL DOGS
  • Security Dogs, practical demonstrations. Information on the BIPDT (BIPDT British Institute Of Professional Dog Trainers) course and accreditation.
  • CADAVER (HUMAN REMAINS) DETECTION DOGS
  • Includes a presentation and demonstration on the role of Cadaver dogs.
  • WAGTAIL UK LIMITED – COURSES AVAILABLE
  • Here we give an insight into the courses that we offer, including courses for most of the subjects covered during the day. Our courses are up to 6 weeks long.  We give full details of course content, standards of efficiency required and costings.  More details on our courses are available immediately on request or from your Regional Resettlement Centre.

No previous dog handling experience is necessary. The day will culminate in the opportunity for some attendees to possibly handle a full trained explosive detection dog to search an area and vehicles.  This will give ‘hands on’ experience in handling detection dogs.
