DRUG MISUSE AT WORK
WHAT
EXACTLY IS DRUG MISUSE? |
?? |
IS
IT MY CONCERN? |
Yes. Drug misuse is not
only a problem for the user but also the business they are employed
by and their co-workers.
"It is an offence under the
Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 for any person knowingly to permit the
production, supply or use of controlled substances on their
premises except in specified circumstances (e.g. when they have
been prescribed by a doctor)."
The possession of drugs not
prescribed to you by a doctor is illegal. It exposes the user
to the chance of criminal charges as well as the harmful effects
to health.
It is important for you to know the implications to both your
employees and business.
Drugs in the workplace cost companies and employers
hundreds of millions
of pounds per year in losses in productivity (UK Government
statistics). Worker's compensation
claims, liability law suits and bottom line profits.
Is your company experiencing some of the symptoms of workplace
drug use?
Sudden mood changes, low morale, unusual irritability or aggression
Poor timekeeping, increased absenteeism Increased theft (arising
from the need to maintain an expensive habit) Decreased productivity/impaired
job performance Higher work related injuries/near misses.
All warning signs of drug use but please remember all the signs
above may be caused by other factors, such as stress and should
be regarded only as indications that an employee may be misusing
drugs.
Remember: It is good practice to have a company policy even if
you have not found any evidence of current drug misuse.
